Saratoga County Traffic Ticket Lawyer
Ticketed on the Northway or in Saratoga Springs? Know Which Court Has Your Case.
Saratoga County tickets go to a city, town, or village court, and the ticket itself tells you which one. Paying it is a guilty plea, and the conviction and its points go on your driving record. Tap your ticket to see what that could cost you.

Which Court, Which Consequences
A ticket on the Northway, Route 9, or Route 50 can land in any of several Saratoga County courts, and the one on your ticket may not be the one nearest your home. Paying it is a guilty plea, and the points that follow can raise your insurance and, over time, put your license at risk.
- 24 months
Points count against your license from the date of the violation.
- $300+
State assessment once you reach six points within 18 months.
- 3 years

Should You Just Pay It?
Paying a ticket is a guilty plea. Once you plead guilty, the conviction and its points go on your record, and the assessment, the insurance increase and the suspension risk follow from there. The moment before you plead is the one that matters most, so find out what a conviction would cost you first.
Ignoring the ticket is worse. If you do not answer it, your license is suspended indefinitely, and you could be found guilty by default.
- You pay the fine
- That is a guilty plea

Points and Your License
New York counts points from the date of the violation, and it counts them over 24 months. Points for the tickets drivers most often get on Saratoga County's roads:
| Ticket | Points |
|---|---|
| Speeding 1 to 10 mph over | 3 |
| Speeding 11 to 20 mph over | 4 |
| Speeding 21 to 30 mph over | 6 |
| Speeding 31 to 40 mph over | 8 |
| Speeding more than 40 mph over | 11 |
| Speeding in a work zone | 8 |
| Using a phone while driving | 5 |
| Following too closely | 4 |
- 11 points in 24 months The DMV may suspend your license.
- 9+ speeding points in 24 months The DMV may call you to a hearing.
- 3 speeding or misdemeanor traffic convictions in 18 months Your license is revoked for at least six months.
Our Albany traffic ticket page lists the points for other tickets.
What a Conviction Can Cost You
The fine and the state surcharge are only the start.
The Driver Responsibility Assessment
Six or more points within 18 months means a state assessment of $100 a year for three years, plus $25 a year for each point over six. One Northway ticket for 21 to 30 mph over is 6 points, so it alone means $300 over three years, on top of the fine. Not paying it leads to a suspension.
Your insurance
Insurance companies use their own point systems and can raise your premium based on your driving record. One study found New York rates rose about 11% on average after a single speeding ticket, usually for around three years. Your own increase depends on your insurer and your record.
Your record
Most traffic convictions stay on your standard driving record until the end of the year of the conviction, plus three more years.
Which Court Hears Your Ticket
- Saratoga Springs City Court 474 Broadway, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866 The court's page
- Mechanicville City Court 36 North Main Street, Mechanicville, NY 12118 The court's page
- Clifton Park Town Court 5 Municipal Plaza, Clifton Park
- Halfmoon Justice Court 1 Halfmoon Town Plaza, Halfmoon
- Malta Town Justice Court 2538 Route 9, Malta
- Wilton Town Court 20 Traver Road, Gansevoort
Outside the five New York City boroughs, the DMV Traffic Violations Bureau does not hear tickets. In Saratoga County, your ticket goes to a city court or to the town or village court where it was written, and the DMV's TVB locator says the same.
The court on your ticket controls. If it differs from the list above, follow the ticket. Our pages for Saratoga Springs City Court and Clifton Park Town Court cover those two courts in detail.
Roads Where Tickets Are Written
- I-87 The Northway
- 9 Route 9
- 50 Route 50
Geography decides the court, so it helps to know which roads lead where. The I-87 Northway runs through Clifton Park, Halfmoon, Malta, Saratoga Springs, Wilton, and Moreau. US 9 follows much of the same ground. NY 50 runs through Ballston, Ballston Spa, Milton, Saratoga Springs, and Wilton.
A ticket on any of these roads lands in the court for the town, village, or city where the stop happened, not necessarily the one nearest your home. Check the court name on the ticket before you plan anything.
Young, Commercial and Out-of-State Drivers
If you drive on another state's license
A Northway ticket on the way to Saratoga Springs, the lake or the Adirondacks can follow you home. Your home state decides how a New York conviction counts on your license there, and New York's Driver Responsibility Assessment applies whatever license you hold. If you ignore a New York ticket, your home state will suspend your license, unless you live in Alaska, California, Michigan, Montana, Oregon or Wisconsin.
If you hold a commercial driver's license
Under federal rules, speeding 15 mph or more over the limit is a serious traffic violation. A second serious violation within three years means 60 days without your CDL, and a third means 120 days. A ticket in your own car counts too if it leads to a suspension of your license.
If you have a junior license, a learner permit or a probationary license
A junior license or learner permit is suspended for 60 days after one conviction for a serious violation of three points or more. A probationary license is suspended for 60 days after a conviction for speeding, reckless driving, following too closely or certain other violations.

How We Handle a Saratoga County Ticket
We start with your ticket. We check it for errors, confirm the court, and explain what a conviction would cost you in points and fees. If you want us to take the case, we deal with the court and the prosecutor from there. We work to reduce the points or the charge where the facts allow, and we tell you whether the court requires you to attend. No outcome can be promised, and results depend on the facts and the court.
We charge a flat fee per ticket and quote it before you commit.
