A Ticket in Rensselaer County
Rensselaer County tickets can end up in many different courts, depending on where the stop happened. Whichever court has yours, paying it is a guilty plea, and the points that follow can raise your insurance and put your license at risk.
- 24 months
Points count against your license from the date of the violation.
- $300+
State assessment once you reach six points within 18 months.
- 3 years
About how long a conviction can keep your insurance higher.
Should You Just Pay It?
Paying a ticket is a guilty plea. Once you plead guilty, the conviction and its points go on your record, and the assessment, the insurance increase and the suspension risk follow from there. The moment before you plead is the one that matters most, so find out what a conviction would cost you first.
Ignoring the ticket is worse. If you do not answer it, your license is suspended indefinitely, and you could be found guilty by default.
- You pay the fine
- That is a guilty plea
- Points go on your record
- Assessment and insurance follow

Points and Your License
New York counts points from the date of the violation, and it counts them over 24 months. Points for the tickets drivers most often get on Rensselaer County's roads:
| Ticket | Points |
|---|---|
| Speeding 1 to 10 mph over | 3 |
| Speeding 11 to 20 mph over | 4 |
| Speeding 21 to 30 mph over | 6 |

| Speeding more than 40 mph over | 11 |
| Speeding in a work zone | 8 |
| Using a phone while driving | 5 |
| Following too closely | 4 |
- 11 points in 24 months The DMV may suspend your license.
- 9+ speeding points in 24 months The DMV may call you to a hearing.
- 3 speeding or misdemeanor traffic convictions in 18 months Your license is revoked for at least six months.
Our Albany traffic ticket page lists the points for other tickets.
What a Conviction Can Cost You
The fine and the state surcharge are only the start.
The Driver Responsibility Assessment
Six or more points within 18 months means a state assessment of $100 a year for three years, plus $25 a year for each point over six. One I-90 ticket for 21 to 30 mph over is 6 points, so it alone means $300 over three years, on top of the fine. Not paying it leads to a suspension.
Your insurance
Insurance companies use their own point systems and can raise your premium based on your driving record. One study found New York rates rose about 11% on average after a single speeding ticket, usually for around three years. Your own increase depends on your insurer and your record.
Your record
Most traffic convictions stay on your standard driving record until the end of the year of the conviction, plus three more years.
Which Court Hears Your Ticket

- Rensselaer City Court 62 Washington Street, Rensselaer, NY 12144 The court's page

- Brunswick Town Court Serves the Brunswick area
Outside the five New York City boroughs, the DMV Traffic Violations Bureau does not hear tickets. That is why a Rensselaer County ticket goes to one of these city courts or to the town or village court where the ticket was written. The DMV explains this on its TVB locator page.
Our Troy City Court page covers Troy in detail.
Roads Where Tickets Are Written
- I-90 I-90
- B1 The Berkshire Spur
- 4 Route 4
- 7 Route 7
- 2 Route 2
The roads matter because they decide the court. I-90 runs through the City of Rensselaer, East Greenbush, North Greenbush, and Schodack. The Thruway Berkshire Spur meets I-90 at Exit B1 in Schodack. US 4 passes through East Greenbush, North Greenbush, and Troy. NY 7 leads out of Troy toward Hoosick, and NY 2 crosses Troy, Brunswick, Grafton, and Petersburgh.
Young, Commercial and Out-of-State Drivers
If you drive on another state's license
A ticket on I-90 or the Berkshire Spur, on the way through Rensselaer County, can follow you home. Your home state decides how a New York conviction counts on your license there, and New York's Driver Responsibility Assessment applies whatever license you hold. If you ignore a New York ticket, your home state will suspend your license, unless you live in Alaska, California, Michigan, Montana, Oregon or Wisconsin.
If you hold a commercial driver's license
Under federal rules, speeding 15 mph or more over the limit is a serious traffic violation. A second serious violation within three years means 60 days without your CDL, and a third means 120 days. A ticket in your own car counts too if it leads to a suspension of your license.
If you have a junior license, a learner permit or a probationary license
A junior license or learner permit is suspended for 60 days after one conviction for a serious violation of three points or more. A probationary license is suspended for 60 days after a conviction for speeding, reckless driving, following too closely or certain other violations.
