Figures come from New York DMV rules and one insurance study; your own costs depend on your record and your insurer.
The Fine Is the Small Part
Paying ends the court case, not the cost. The points count against your license for 24 months, six or more within 18 months bring a state assessment of at least $300, and the conviction can keep your insurance higher for about three years. A Northway ticket for 31 to 40 mph over is 8 points, which alone means $450.
- 24 months
Points count against your license from the date of the violation.
- $300+
State assessment once you reach six points within 18 months.
- 3 years

Should You Just Pay It?
Paying a ticket is a guilty plea. Once you plead guilty, the conviction and its points go on your record, and the assessment, the insurance increase and the suspension risk follow from there. The moment before you plead is the one that matters most, so find out what a conviction would cost you first.
Ignoring the ticket is worse. If you do not answer it, your license is suspended indefinitely, and you could be found guilty by default.

Points and Your License
New York adds points when you are convicted and counts them from the date of the violation, over 24 months. Points for common tickets on the Northway and Route 146:
| Ticket | Points |
|---|---|
| Speeding 1 to 10 mph over | 3 |
| Speeding 11 to 20 mph over | 4 |
| Speeding 21 to 30 mph over | 6 |
| Speeding 31 to 40 mph over | 8 |
| Speeding more than 40 mph over | 11 |
| Speeding in a work zone | 8 |
| Using a phone while driving | 5 |
| Following too closely | 4 |
- 11 points in 24 months The DMV may suspend your license.
- 9+ speeding points in 24 months The DMV may call you to a hearing.
- 3 speeding or misdemeanor traffic convictions in 18 months Your license is revoked for at least six months.

What a Conviction Can Cost You
The fine and the state surcharge are only the start.
The Driver Responsibility Assessment
Six or more points within 18 months means a state assessment of $100 a year for three years, plus $25 a year for each point over six. One Northway ticket for 21 to 30 mph over is 6 points, so it alone means $300 over three years, on top of the fine. Not paying it leads to a suspension.
Your insurance
Insurance companies use their own point systems and can raise your premium based on your driving record. One study found New York rates rose about 11% on average after a single speeding ticket, usually for around three years. Your own increase depends on your insurer and your record.
Your record
Most traffic convictions stay on your standard driving record until the end of the year of the conviction, plus three more years.

Young, Commercial and Out-of-State Drivers
If you drive on another state's license
A Northway ticket on the way to or from the Adirondacks or Canada can follow you home. Your home state decides how a New York conviction counts on your license there, and New York's Driver Responsibility Assessment applies whatever license you hold. If you ignore a New York ticket, your home state will suspend your license, unless you live in Alaska, California, Michigan, Montana, Oregon or Wisconsin.
If you hold a commercial driver's license
Under federal rules, speeding 15 mph or more over the limit is a serious traffic violation. A second serious violation within three years means 60 days without your CDL, and a third means 120 days. A ticket in your own car counts too if it leads to a suspension of your license.
If you have a junior license, a learner permit or a probationary license
A junior license or learner permit is suspended for 60 days after one conviction for a serious violation of three points or more. A probationary license is suspended for 60 days after a conviction for speeding, reckless driving, following too closely or certain other violations.

How We Handle a Clifton Park Ticket
We start by reading your ticket, including whether it charges a traffic infraction or a misdemeanor, and checking it against your record and the 24-month and 18-month rules. We tell you plainly what a conviction would cost you. If you hire us, we deal with the Saratoga County District Attorney's office, which prosecutes traffic cases in Clifton Park Town Court, and with the court for you, and we work to reduce the points or the charge where the facts allow. We tell you whether the court requires you to attend. Results depend on the facts and the court, and no outcome can be promised.
You work directly with your attorney, from our office in Albany. Our flat fee covers our legal work on your ticket, and we quote it before you commit. Fines, surcharges and DMV fees are separate.
