Figures come from New York DMV rules and one insurance study; your own costs depend on your record and your insurer.

The Fine Is the Small Part

The fine is paid once. The points are not: they count against your license for 24 months from the date of the ticket, and they stay on your driving record, where your insurer can use them, for as long as the conviction does. One Route 7 ticket for 21 to 30 mph over is 6 points, enough on its own for a state assessment of at least $300.

  • 24 months

Points count against your license from the date of the violation.

  • $300+

State assessment once you reach six points within 18 months.

  • 3 years

Should You Just Pay It?

Paying a ticket is a guilty plea. Once you plead guilty, the conviction and its points go on your record, and the assessment, the insurance increase and the suspension risk follow from there. The moment before you plead is the one that matters most, so find out what a conviction would cost you first.

Ignoring the ticket is worse. If you do not answer it, your license is suspended indefinitely, and you could be found guilty by default.

  3. Points go on your record
  4. Assessment and insurance follow

Points and Your License

New York adds points only after a conviction, counts them from the date of the violation, and counts them over 24 months. Points for common tickets on Troy's streets and bridges:

TicketPoints
Speeding 1 to 10 mph over 3
Speeding 11 to 20 mph over 4
Speeding 21 to 30 mph over 6
Speeding 31 to 40 mph over 8
Speeding more than 40 mph over 11
Speeding in a work zone 8
Using a phone while driving 5
Following too closely 4
  • 11 points in 24 months The DMV may suspend your license.
  • 9+ speeding points in 24 months The DMV may call you to a hearing.
  • 3 speeding or misdemeanor traffic convictions in 18 months Your license is revoked for at least six months.

Our Albany traffic ticket page lists the points for other tickets.

What a Conviction Can Cost You

The fine and the state surcharge are only the start.

The Driver Responsibility Assessment

Six or more points within 18 months means a state assessment of $100 a year for three years, plus $25 a year for each point over six. One Route 7 ticket for 21 to 30 mph over is 6 points, so it alone means $300 over three years, on top of the fine. Not paying it leads to a suspension.

Your insurance

Insurance companies use their own point systems and can raise your premium based on your driving record. One study found New York rates rose about 11% on average after a single speeding ticket, usually for around three years. Your own increase depends on your insurer and your record.

Your record

Most traffic convictions stay on your standard driving record until the end of the year of the conviction, plus three more years.

Which Court Hears Your Ticket

Troy City Court Criminal and Traffic Part, Second Floor 51 State Street, Troy, NY 12180

Traffic tickets written in the City of Troy, including Lansingburgh in the north end of the city, are heard in the criminal and traffic part of Troy City Court, on the second floor. The court's civil part is one floor up.

Tickets written just outside the city go to the court where the stop happened: the town court in Brunswick, North Greenbush or Schaghticoke, or the court across the river in Watervliet, Green Island or Cohoes. The court named on your ticket controls. Our Rensselaer County page covers the county's other courts.

  • 40 Route 40 to Oakwood Avenue
  • 470 The 112th Street Bridge

Route 7 runs along Hoosick Street and crosses the Hudson on the Collar City Bridge. Route 4 runs through downtown on Third and Fourth Streets, then north on River Street and Second Avenue through Lansingburgh. Route 2 comes in from Watervliet over the Congress Street Bridge, and the Green Island and 112th Street bridges bring more traffic across the river. A ticket on any of these roads inside the city is a Troy ticket.

Tickets here are written by the Troy Police and the New York State Police, whose Brunswick station sits just outside the city. Wherever you live, a ticket written in Troy stays with Troy City Court.

Young, Commercial and Out-of-State Drivers

If you drive on another state's license

If you study at RPI on another state's license, a Troy ticket can follow you home. Your home state decides how a New York conviction counts on your license there, and New York's Driver Responsibility Assessment applies whatever license you hold. If you ignore a New York ticket, your home state will suspend your license, unless you live in Alaska, California, Michigan, Montana, Oregon or Wisconsin.

If you hold a commercial driver's license

Under federal rules, speeding 15 mph or more over the limit is a serious traffic violation. A second serious violation within three years means 60 days without your CDL, and a third means 120 days. A ticket in your own car counts too if it leads to a suspension of your license.

If you have a junior license, a learner permit or a probationary license

A junior license or learner permit is suspended for 60 days after one conviction for a serious violation of three points or more. A probationary license is suspended for 60 days after a conviction for speeding, reckless driving, following too closely or certain other violations.

How We Handle a Troy City Court Ticket

We start with your ticket and your driving record. We check the charge against the 24-month and 18-month rules and tell you plainly what a conviction would cost you in points, assessments and insurance. If you hire us, we deal with the Rensselaer County District Attorney's office, which assigns prosecutors to Troy City Court, and with the court itself, and we work to reduce the points or the charge where the facts allow. We tell you whether the court requires you to attend. Results depend on the facts and the court, and no outcome can be promised.

You work directly with your attorney, from our office in Albany. Our flat fee covers our legal work on your ticket, and we quote it before you commit. Fines, surcharges and DMV fees are separate.

Questions Drivers Ask

Which court handles a ticket written in Lansingburgh?
Troy City Court, at 51 State Street. Lansingburgh is part of the City of Troy, so a ticket written there is a Troy ticket, heard in the court's criminal and traffic part on the second floor.
I was ticketed just over the city line. Which court has my case?
The court for the place where you were stopped. A ticket written in Brunswick, North Greenbush or Schaghticoke goes to that town's court, and one written across the river in Watervliet, Green Island or Cohoes goes to the court there. The court named on your ticket controls.
I go to RPI on an out-of-state license. Can a Troy ticket follow me home?
It can, in three ways. Your home state decides how a New York conviction counts on your license. New York's Driver Responsibility Assessment can apply whatever license you hold. And if you ignore the ticket, your home state will suspend your license, unless you live in Alaska, California, Michigan, Montana, Oregon or Wisconsin.
Can one ticket put my license at risk on its own?
Yes. Speeding more than 40 mph over the limit is 11 points, and at 11 points in 24 months the DMV may suspend your license. That one ticket also brings a state assessment of $675 over three years, on top of the fine.
Can my insurance go up for a ticket that isn't for speeding?
It can. Insurance companies use their own point systems and can raise your premium based on your driving record. A phone ticket is 5 points and a ticket for following too closely is 4, more than a ticket for 1 to 10 mph over. Your own increase depends on your insurer and your record.
Can a lawyer handle a Troy ticket for me?
Yes. The DMV's driver's manual says every driver who gets a traffic ticket can present a defense and be represented by a lawyer. Send us your ticket for a free review, and we quote a flat fee before you commit. Fines, surcharges and DMV fees are separate.
