The Fine Is the Small Part
You pay the fine once. The conviction stays: its points count against your license for 24 months, and six or more points within 18 months bring a state assessment of at least $300. On Route 20, one ticket for 21 to 30 mph over is 6 points, so a single stop can reach that line.
- 24 months
Points count against your license from the date of the violation.
- $300+
State assessment once you reach six points within 18 months.
- 3 years

Should You Just Pay It?
Paying a ticket is a guilty plea. Once you plead guilty, the conviction and its points go on your record, and the assessment, the insurance increase and the suspension risk follow from there. The moment before you plead is the one that matters most, so find out what a conviction would cost you first.
Ignoring the ticket is worse. If you do not answer it, your license is suspended indefinitely, and you could be found guilty by default.

Points and Your License
Once you are convicted, New York counts the points from the date of the violation, over 24 months. Points for common tickets on Route 20, the Thruway and the town's other roads:
| Ticket | Points |
|---|---|
| Speeding 1 to 10 mph over | 3 |
| Speeding 11 to 20 mph over | 4 |
| Speeding 21 to 30 mph over | 6 |
| Speeding 31 to 40 mph over | 8 |
| Speeding more than 40 mph over | 11 |
| Speeding in a work zone | 8 |
| Using a phone while driving | 5 |
| Following too closely | 4 |
- 11 points in 24 months The DMV may suspend your license.
- 9+ speeding points in 24 months The DMV may call you to a hearing.
- 3 speeding or misdemeanor traffic convictions in 18 months Your license is revoked for at least six months.
Our Albany traffic ticket page lists the points for other tickets.
What a Conviction Can Cost You
The fine and the state surcharge are only the start.
The Driver Responsibility Assessment
Six or more points within 18 months means a state assessment of $100 a year for three years, plus $25 a year for each point over six. One Route 20 ticket for 21 to 30 mph over is 6 points, so it alone means $300 over three years, on top of the fine. Not paying it leads to a suspension.
Your insurance
Insurance companies use their own point systems and can raise your premium based on your driving record. One study found New York rates rose about 11% on average after a single speeding ticket, usually for around three years. Your own increase depends on your insurer and your record.
Your record
Most traffic convictions stay on your standard driving record until the end of the year of the conviction, plus three more years.

- 158 Route 158
- Crossgates Mall Road
Route 20 (Western Turnpike and Western Avenue) runs the length of the town, past Town Hall itself. The Thruway runs through Guilderland too. Route 146 (Carman Road) and Route 158 meet Route 20 inside the town, and Route 155 runs through its southeastern corner. Crossgates Mall, on the town's eastern edge, is in Guilderland as well, so a ticket on Crossgates Mall Road is a Guilderland ticket.

Young, Commercial and Out-of-State Drivers
If you drive on another state's license
A ticket on the Thruway or on the way to Crossgates can follow you home. Your home state decides how a New York conviction counts on your license there, and New York's Driver Responsibility Assessment applies whatever license you hold. If you ignore a New York ticket, your home state will suspend your license, unless you live in Alaska, California, Michigan, Montana, Oregon or Wisconsin.
If you hold a commercial driver's license
Under federal rules, speeding 15 mph or more over the limit is a serious traffic violation. A second serious violation within three years means 60 days without your CDL, and a third means 120 days. A ticket in your own car counts too if it leads to a suspension of your license.
If you have a junior license, a learner permit or a probationary license
A junior license or learner permit is suspended for 60 days after one conviction for a serious violation of three points or more. A probationary license is suspended for 60 days after a conviction for speeding, reckless driving, following too closely or certain other violations.
